From a single funeral parlour in Hammarsdale to the helm of Icebolethu Group, Dr Nomfundo Mcoyi-Zondo has built an entrepreneurial journey around a principle that challenges how many people think about the funeral industry: a business built around loss can also be built around lifelong care.
Her work spans funeral services, financial products, lifestyle offerings, skills development and community investment. Yet the most revealing part of her story is not simply the range of businesses she leads. It is what she recognised early on: that customers needed far more than basic bereavement services, and that a company could grow by supporting families at every stage of life.
Mcoyi-Zondo started with one funeral parlour in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, more than a decade and a half ago. Today, that venture is Icebolethu Group, a diversified organisation of 13 companies. The name Icebolethu, meaning “Our Plan” in isiZulu, reflects a commitment to ensuring that every family has access to compassionate, dignified funeral services. The company’s guiding philosophy, “Dedicated to the care of those we serve”, has shaped its growth from the beginning.
That early commitment to dignity and affordability became the foundation for something larger. Rather than remaining a traditional service provider, Mcoyi-Zondo led a strategic pivot that evolved the company into a comprehensive lifestyle and financial services brand, supporting customers through its promise: “We do life with you.”
The result is the Full Life Circle model, which provides value while clients are alive, at the time of passing and in the years that follow. The integrated offering includes funeral cover, savings and rewards programmes, mobile connectivity through i-Mobile, travel services through i-Travel, catering, burial services, tombstones, memorial parks and ongoing family support. For customers, this can mean a relationship with a trusted brand that does not begin and end with bereavement.
The scale of that approach is significant. Icebolethu now operates more than 200 branches across nine provinces, employs nearly 3,000 people and covers over one million lives. Its funeral division has attracted more than 500,000 policyholders, and the group is South Africa’s second-largest funeral assurance provider. It also has a presence in the United Kingdom, where it supports SADC nationals through funeral arrangements and international repatriation services so that families can honour cultural traditions wherever they are.
Beyond funeral services and cover, the group’s portfolio includes memorials, property investments, security services, cleaning services, skills development and community initiatives. As a licensed Financial Services Provider, it offers funeral cover products designed for different financial needs, with a nationwide branch network and retail presence that make cover accessible to communities across South Africa.
Governance is central to how she leads. Working in the highly regulated funeral and financial sectors requires strict operational frameworks, which she supports through the Icebolethu Academy. The academy contributes to skills development and trains employees on industry regulations and guidelines, helping them deliver the standard of service for which the company is known.
Her influence on the wider industry is also clear. In 2025, she was elected the first female President of the South African Funeral Practitioners Association. She is a former member of the Accounting Authority and Chair of the Governance Risk and Strategy Committee, roles that reflect her focus on compliance that protects both consumers and the market.
Her ambitions extend beyond commercial growth. Through the Icebolethu Foundation, established in 2015, the organisation invests in education, food security, youth development, elderly care and programmes supporting vulnerable children. The foundation’s work was recognised at the 2025 Commonwealth Business Excellence Awards, where the group won Best Organisation for Corporate Social Investment and she was honoured as a social change maker.
The initiative reflects her belief that business success and community dignity belong together. Her leadership has been recognised internationally, including the Fastest Growing Organisation Led by a Woman and Best Customer Excellence awards at the 2023 Commonwealth Business Excellence Awards in Singapore, an Honorary Doctorate from Mangosuthu University of Technology in 2023, the 2021 Global Business Leader of the Year title and the 2024 African Business Conference Women of the Year award.
Outside the boardroom, she balances her executive role with being a mother to three young adults. She shared her passion for cooking in her 2020 cookbook, Boardroom to the Kitchen, and her travels across the USA, UK, Greece, the UAE, Japan and Ghana help her bring international best practice back to the African business landscape.
Taken together, her experiences point to a wider lesson for leaders across Africa. In a sector shaped by regulation, emotion and trust, growth requires more than expansion. It depends on strong governance, well-trained people, and a clear commitment to protecting the dignity of the communities served.
Mcoyi-Zondo’s experience suggests that a founder’s lasting contribution may be not only the company she builds, but the ecosystem around it: the families it serves, the people it trains, the standards it helps set and the opportunities it creates. It shifts the focus from delivering a single service to building a business that remains relevant at every stage of a customer’s life.
What can the next generation of entrepreneurs learn from a founder who turned one funeral parlour into a lifestyle and financial services group? And how can empathy, governance and integrated services help more African businesses grow sustainably?
