Thabiso, a rising star in South Africa’s comedy scene, never intended to be a comedian. In fact, his entry into comedy was completely by chance. “I never really had an inspiration to get into comedy,” he laughs. “I kind of bumped into it, and I fell in love.”
Originally from a background in sports management, Thabiso found himself unexpectedly drawn into the world of stand-up comedy. The transition from sports to comedy wasn’t planned, but it quickly became a decision he cherished. “I didn’t plan it, but as I kept performing, I realized this is what I wanted to do. I felt like I had a voice and a unique way of communicating with people.”
As Thabiso carved out his path in comedy, he quickly realized that it wasn’t just about the laughs. The business side of comedy became just as important. “I’m still learning about the business of stand-up,” Thabiso admits. “But the more I grow, the more interesting it becomes.” He acknowledges that as his brand continues to grow, his understanding of the industry also deepens.
Despite his growing knowledge of the business, Thabiso confesses that managing the logistics of his career isn’t his forte. “I don’t like admin. I swear up a storm whenever paperwork comes my way,” he laughs. Fortunately, his manager, Mpho Nthabgeni (whom Thabiso affectionately calls his “DJ”), helps manage the behind-the-scenes details. “I focus on the funny side of things, and Mpho and the team handle everything else,” Thabiso explains. “It’s all about focusing on your strengths.”
With guidance from seasoned comedian Mpho Popps, Thabiso has embraced a business model focused on leaving the behind-the-scenes work to the professionals. “The model is simple,” he says. “You surround yourself with a great team, and you focus on the craft. That’s exactly what I do. I just worry about making people laugh, and they handle the rest.”
