Pravin Gordhan: A Life Dedicated to Public Service and the Fight Against Corruption
Pravin Gordhan, a titan in South Africa’s political landscape and a key figure in the resistance against state capture, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 75. Gordhan’s legacy, shaped by his tenacity, integrity, and relentless service to the country, will be remembered for his unwavering fight against corruption and his pioneering leadership at the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
A Peaceful Farewell
According to a statement from his family, Gordhan died peacefully in a Johannesburg hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. “We have made our contribution,” he reportedly told those close to him in his final days, expressing that he had “no regrets.” He leaves behind his wife, Vanitha, and his daughters, Anisha and Priyesha.
The former finance minister was admitted to the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre on Tuesday, following a recent cancer diagnosis. Gordhan had retired from politics earlier this year after a career that spanned decades and was marked by his fearless dedication to the liberation struggle and his leadership in public service.
A Lifelong Fight for Justice and Accountability
Pravin Gordhan’s life story is inseparable from South Africa’s modern history. A trained pharmacist who emerged as a freedom fighter during the country’s darkest years, Gordhan’s career in politics and public service is best known for his role in resisting state capture under former president Jacob Zuma and the notorious Gupta family.
Gordhan served twice as finance minister, first from 2009 to 2014, and later during a critical period between December 2015 and March 2017, when the country’s financial integrity was most vulnerable. It was during this time that Gordhan and the senior leadership at National Treasury acted as a bulwark against the Zuma-Gupta-led project of corruption, a grand scheme that sought to seize control of key institutions like the Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank.
However, Gordhan’s final years in government, notably as Minister of Public Enterprises, were marked by immense challenges. His tenure saw limited success in improving the performance of state-owned enterprises, particularly Eskom, which remained plagued by load shedding, mismanagement, and corruption. His efforts to privatize South African Airways (SAA) also faced significant setbacks.
The Architect of SARS’ Transformation
Perhaps Gordhan’s most enduring contribution to South Africa was his role as the founding commissioner of SARS in 1998. Under his leadership, SARS transformed into one of the world’s most respected revenue services, pioneering innovations in tax collection and technology. The efficiency of the institution under Gordhan enabled the South African government to expand its service delivery, investing in healthcare, education, and infrastructure projects designed to address the inequalities left by apartheid.
Alongside then-finance minister Trevor Manuel, Gordhan approved the creation of a specialized investigations unit at SARS to target organized crime and illicit financial flows. The unit proved highly effective, recovering billions of rand for the South African fiscus. However, its success also drew the ire of corrupt networks, leading to concerted efforts to undermine Gordhan’s leadership through disinformation and political attacks.
A Legacy of Integrity
Despite the turbulence of his later years in office, Gordhan’s reputation as a principled leader and a fighter for justice remains intact. His role in exposing and resisting state capture, as well as his transformative work at SARS, cements his place as one of South Africa’s most important post-apartheid figures.
Pravin Gordhan leaves behind a complex legacy—one of remarkable achievements in the face of enormous challenges, unwavering commitment to the country, and a lifetime dedicated to the fight for accountability and transparency in public service.
As South Africa reflects on Gordhan’s passing, his contributions to the nation’s political and economic fabric serve as a reminder of the importance of leadership rooted in integrity and a relentless dedication to justice.
